Modern Warfare 24/7
Intervention
Intervention
The Intervention is one of the snipers that is unlocked from the start in multiplayer, and it’s also one of the best. The Intervention does the highest damage per shot of all sniper rifles, tied with the Barrett 50. Cal. One shot to the chest or head of a target, even without stopping power, will be a kill. Shots to the limbs can be one hit kills with stopping power engaged. The Intervention is one of the best sniper rifles to use with a silencer because it is still usually a one hit kill, especially with Stopping Power on. To balance this out, the Intervention has a high rate of sway, making it more difficult to aim than most sniper rifles, and is bolt-action operated, giving it a much lower rate of fire than the other sniper rifles in MW2, which are all semi-automatic.
  Barrett .50cal
Barrett .50cal
The Barrett does the same amount of damage as the Intervention, but is semi-automatic and so has a much higher rate of fire. However, the recoil increases dramatically with every shot fired, so it’s a better idea to space your shots well rather than firing rapidly in the hopes of a hit. The Barrett also makes an extremely loud and distinctive sound when firing, making it easy to identify and locate snipers using one. This makes using the silencer a good idea, as otherwise your location will be exposed quite quickly. The Silencer does reduce damage, but hits to the torso will still be a one shot kill with Stopping Power enabled.

WA2000
WA2000
The WA2000 is unlocked at a relatively high level in the game, and does almost as much damage as the Intervention, being around as accurate, while having a much higher rate of fire and being semi-automatic. With less sway than the Intervention, the WA2000 would appear to be superior in every way. However, the WA2000 is slightly less deadly at extreme ranges with torso shots. It comes down to personal preference as to which rifle is better, but the WA2000 is generally better than the Intervention and Barrett in most ways.

  M21 EBR
M21 EBRThe M21 EBR is the last sniper rifle unlocked in Modern Warfare 2, and a more specialized one than the first three. It will not usually kill in a single shot to the chest, and requires a follow up shot at long ranges. It is semi-automatic and highly accurate, but the follow up shot required in normal modes makes it a very different rifle to use than the other three. In Hardcore, where one shot of any sniper rifle is always lethal, this weapon is arguably the most effective sniper weapon. A thermal scope allows for greater peripheral vision and makes it easier to see enemies through smoke, blizzard, or explosion debris. These line of sight obstructions normally make it difficult to snipe, but the thermal scope avoids these problems.
