Modern Warfare 24/7
L86 LSW
L86 LSW
The L86 LMG is unlocked from the outset in Modern Warfare 2 and is a versatile light machine gun. With decent accuracy and good stopping power and rate of fire, the L86 doesn’t have any great weaknesses. In my experience the L86’s recoil can make it difficult to aim the iron sights at distant targets. This makes upgrading it with the red dot sight, the holographic sight, or the ACOG/Thermal sights a great idea. The high rate of fire of the L86 does burn through its clip relatively quickly, and the reload time is quite long. Firing in bursts with this weapon is always the best idea, as it can’t be used quite as effectively in fully automatic as some of the other LMGs.
RPD
RPD
The RPD returns from COD4 to be one of the most versatile LMGs in Modern Warfare 2. In a game filled with extremely deadly weapons, the RPD is among the most lethal in sheer stopping power, and highly accurate with a relatively low rate of fire. The low rate of fire and accuracy of the RPD, when combined with its very large clip size, allow players to use it very effectively in fully automatic mode. The player can simply hold down on the trigger for long periods of time without significant depreciation in accuracy if the player compensates for the recoil. This makes it one of the best weapons in the game for taking out multiple targets without pausing or reloading.
AUG HBAR
AUG HBAR
The AUG HBAR is very similar to the RPD, having similar damage and rate of fire but significantly better accuracy. This is balanced by the AUG’s smaller magazine size that requires more frequent reloading, an important consideration with the long reload time of LMGs. For players that can manage the magazine capacity, firing in bursts and timing their reloads well, the AUG is unparalleled. However, less experienced players may find it a tricky weapon to use compared to the RPD.
MG4
MG4
The MG4 trades damage for increased accuracy and a very high rate of fire. It’s one of the most accurate LMGs in Modern Warfare 2, and is the best one to use when engaging distant targets using sniper rifles or assault rifles. Close in, its high rate of fire gives players using it a good chance against enemies with shotguns or SMGs. Overall, the MG4 is a high rate of fire, high accuracy, low damage LMG, which is contrasted with the low accuracy, low rate of fire, high damage RPD. Which type of LMG is preferable is really up to personal preference and the situation, as they each have their own advantages and disadvantages and, like all the other weapons in MW2, are very well balanced.

M240
M240
The M240 will seem familiar to COD4 players, as it is very similar to the M249 SAW LMG. Almost functionally identical, the M240 has the highest rate of fire of any LMG in the game, and considerable accuracy as well. In Hardcore games, this high rate of fire allows for the entire enemy team to be gunned down very quickly, provided that they are exposed in the open. The M240 does trade damage for rate of fire, and doesn’t have the same stopping power per bullet that other LMGs like the RPD do. However, the very high volume of bullets fired means that it often kills enemies faster despite this. With a large magazine capacity, the M240 is without any significant weaknesses and a very good LMG overall.
