Modern Warfare 24/7

M4A1M4A1
Those who liked the M4A1 in COD4 will probably like it again, as the M4A1 in Modern Warfare 2 is very similar. With low recoil despite a high rate of fire, the M4A1 can be effective at long ranges. In close quarter fighting, the rate of fire allows for effective hip fire as well. While the M4A1 is versatile, it usually isn’t the best weapon in any one scenario, being a jack of all trades but a master of none. The iron sights can be used for effective pin point aiming at long range but the holographic and ACOG scopes are definitely an upgrade, if the player can compensate for the increased sway of the gun.

FAMASFAMAS
The FAMAS is a weapon available to very new MW2 players online, and it’s a good thing too, because it is incredibly useful in the right situation. Like the M16A4 from COD4, the FAMAS will kill an enemy in a single 3 shot burst to the torso, with stopping power perk engaged, at any range. This makes it useful for anything from very close in room clearing combat to sniper rifle ranged engagements, all while using the standard iron sights. The iron sights are very effective: fancier thermal scopes or ACOG sights may seem tempting, but they’re often not worth the compromise when the iron sights work as well as they do on the FAMAS. It’s not used very often, but is easily one of the best assault rifles to use when outnumbered at long range.

SCAR-H
SCAR-H
The SCAR-H is a very damaging assault rifle that is balanced by its small clip and reasonable amount of recoil. The iron sights also aren’t as intuitive as those of the M4A1 or FAMAS, though players can become accustomed to them relatively quickly. The recoil makes it less effective at long range, especially with the default iron sights, but when upgraded with holographic or ACOG sights it can be very competitive at long range. Close in, the high damage kills enemies quickly and penetrates many materials well.

TAR-21
TAR-21
The TAR-21 is unusual in that it has a default scope of its own, a customized red dot scope. This scope can be replaced with other sights, though the default scope is the fastest to aim down the sights on the gun with. The TAR-21 is highly damaging, similar to the SCAR-H, but has a higher rate of fire. This is compensated by considerably lower accuracy than the SCAR-H. The high damage and high rate of fire of the TAR-21 make it very effective for close in encounters, and unlike a submachine gun or machine pistol it will penetrate thinner materials such as dry wall and loose brick.
FAL
FAL
The FAL is most similar to the M14 from COD4 in that it is a semi-automatic rifle that fires one round per press of the trigger button. This rate of fire is more similar to a sniper rifle than most assault rifles. However, these rounds are very accurate and powerful, making the FAL something of a hybrid sniper-assault rifle. When equipped with the right ACOG or thermal scope, the FAL can be as easy to use at range as a sniper rifle and just as deadly. To counter its lower damage, the FAL has a much larger clip than most sniper rifles. Like the M14, it is also effective at medium range firefights if aimed and used well.

M16A4
M16A4
The M16A4 is very similar to the infamous version in COD4, and will kill its targets in one three round burst to the torso, much like the FAMAS. However, the M16A4 does considerably more damage per shot than the FAMAS, and this is balanced out by it being less accurate and having a slower rate of fire than the FAMAS. The M16A4’s iron sights are also considerably more difficult to use than the FAMAS, an important consideration in long-range firefights. When equipped with a holographic, red dot, or ACOG sight, the M16A4 is definitely one of the best assault rifles in Modern Warfare 2.
ACR
ACR
The ACR is an extremely accurate assault rifle that has average damage and rate of fire. This makes it a great specialist weapon for players who prefer to aim precisely and go for headshots. It’s also a generally versatile assault rifle that performs well in many situations, but isn’t dominant in close quarter fighting. The high accuracy makes it a good long ranged weapon to use for counter sniping or other long range battles when sniper rifles aren’t available. With the ACR and a decent machine pistol or shotgun as a secondary weapon, a good MW2 player will be able to deal with any threat.
  F2000
F2000
The F2000 trades mediocre damage and low accuracy for a very high rate of fire, making it similar to a submachine gun while still possessing the penetrating power of an assault rifle. It can be useful for close quarter fighting for specialists who like to use an assault rifle that can shoot through thin walls while still competing with machine pistols and SMGs for rate of fire. At medium and longer ranges the F2000 is not as effective, though with the right scopes and player skill it can be used effectively, like any assault rifle.

AK-47
AK-47
Ironically, the most produced assault rifle of all time is the rarest in Modern Warfare 2. The AK-47 is only unlocked after reaching the very highest level available, and is exceedingly uncommon on the battlefield as a result. It doesn’t have any particular strengths or weaknesses, and is simply a versatile assault rifle with high damage and average accuracy that can be used in any situation. The recoil is considerable but can be managed by a skilled player, making it something of a higher damage, higher recoil M4A1. Personal preference is the reason to use the AK-47, as at Level 70 the player will have access to every other gun in the game.
