Lighting is a demanding job, here is a list of many of the tools/effects that I have found to be very useful.
C-Clamps and Safety Cable - Essential to safely hanging any light. The C - Clamp holds the light onto the pole and can be tightened and adjusted to allow for almost any angle. The safety cable is just in case the clamp slips, it should be able to hold the weight of your light and prevent it from falling.
Color Scrollers - Contrary to popular belief, a lighting crew can not change their light colors with the touch of a button. This little effect device is as close as we can get. Put the scroller in the gel slot of a light and hook the controller into your board's DMX port and you can change the color of the gel by adjusting the level of the channel you have the scroller set to.
Cords (electrical) - Really, need I explain these?
- Standard Edison Plug Extension

- Three Pin Stage Light Extension

- Stage Pin to Edison Convertors

Cresent Wrench - Your best friend! With this you can hang and adjust almost any light. Always keep a few around!
Duct Tape - You really can fix just about anything with this stuff!
Electrical Tape - Great for the small jobs where duct tape would be overkill.
- Add a sharpie, and you can label your board!
Gel Holders - Pretty hard to get a gel to stay in a light with out these
Gloves - Very useful for a variety of reasons. Lights get very hot, very quickly, which makes it hard to handle/aim them, so I use welding gloves to protect myself from the heat. I also use gloves to avoid rope burns from the pullies.
Gobos/Holders - These little metal circles can make some pretty sweet patterns and effects (lights through trees, reflected off water, and broadway signs/lights are some that I have used)
Gobo Rotator - A very cool effect device. Allows you to load the gobo of your choice in a light and spin it in any direction/at any speed you want. (More expensive models have preset patterns and other features).
Lasers - Every little kids dream! These are great for special effects when coupled with fog. Much more expensive models can move on their own and do cool patterns. The one shown is just 2 red and 2 green lasers that I can aim by using high density mirrors and adjust via DMX input.
Multi-Tool and Flashlight - I always carry both of these on my belt, during set-up and running a show. You never know what might happen, and between these two, you can fix most small problems
Paper Cutter - Makes cutting gels so much easier and quicker than other methods.
Two - For - One - Called a two-for/tufor for short. This handy device allows you to hook up 2 lights/a light and a gobo rotator into onechannel.
