Rules of Ice Hockey
RINK
» Approximately 200 ft. by 100 ft. with boards about 42 in. high
» Goals are 4 ft. tall and 6 ft. wide placed on the goal line
» Goal crease is a 6 ft. semicircle in front of the goal
» 2 blue lines 64 ft. from the goal closest to it, one red line at center ice
» 5 face off spots (one at center ice and two on each side of each goal)
» The puck is 1 in. thick, 3 in. diameter, about 6 oz., and black usually made of rubber
TEAMS
» 6 players on the ice at a time (including the goalie)
» 1 captain and 2 'alternates' who wear letters signifying their rank
» Skates must be worn by all players
» Other equipment has specific dimensions and regulations (sticks, helmets, goalie pads, etc.)
PENALTIES
» Minor penalties: 2 minutes in the penalty box (your team is down a skater for those 2 minutes)
» Major penalties: 5 minutes in the penalty box (same as minor penalties)
» Misconduct: 10 minutes in the penalty box (a substitute player is allowed to go in for you)
» Game Misconduct: suspended from remainder of current game plus the next game
» When 3 players from the same team have penalties simultaneously the third player can have a substitute until one player is released (when the third player's 2 minutes start)
» Penalties include slashing, cross-checking, checking from behind, high sticking, fighting, too many players on the ice, etc.
