Marc Jacobs was born in New York City on April 9, 1963. After Graduating from the High School of Art and Design in 1981, he entered Parsons School of Design. Here he designed his first collection of knit sweaters, which was sold by Barbara Weiser. The collection was sold under the label "Marc Jacobs for Marc and Barbara" for the Weiser Family's well-known stores, Charivari. On a night in 1984 Jacobs showed his senior collection and recieved many honors for it: The Perry Ellis
Gold Thimble, The Chester Wenberg Gold Thimble, and Design Student of the Year. With all of these awards he also recieved a call to make a ready-to-wear colleciton for Ruben Thomas Inc. under the Sketchbook Label.
His design for Thomas started a partnership, called Jacobs Duffy Designs Inc. In 1986 Jacobs designed his first collection
bearing the Marc Jacobs Label. In 1987 Jacobs won the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion
Talent, the youngest ever to win this award. In 1992 the CFDA gave Jacobs the award of Womenswear
Designer of the Year. In 1998, Jacobs received the Women's Designer of the Year Award at the VH1 Fashion Awards, Also in 1999 he was named Accessories Designer of the Year by the CFDA.
